Mango- Shaped Space by Wendy Mass. Copyright 2003. 218 pages.
Just imagine waking up every morning, but instead of just hearing a door slam you see a dark musty brown poof of air. This is how 13 Mia, a girl with Synesthesia see's every day life. every since the incident in third grade, Mia has been trying to keep her mysterious "powers" to herself. But now in eighth grade, the dam breaks when she finally admits to her seeing colors. This is a novel about friendship, love, and the ability to forgive. Mia encounters all these hurdles, in the quest to finally understand who she is and why she has Synesthesia.
The author Wendy Mass portras the disability Synesthesia in a very acvurate and understandable manner. She gives perfect, examples of how her main character Mia would expereince things different than other people. For example, some people might just feel the pinch of needles during the process of accupucture. However, Mia gains the ability to see peoples "auras" eluminating around them. Information like this I didn't know until I read this book. Futhermore, the colors Mia saw were just at random she couldn't control them. Another fact I learned forom the book is that unlike what I thought, is that not all synesthestes see the same colors.
Instead of being just constant facts, it was a great book to read and I just couldn't put it down! Wendy Mass did a spectacular job of making learning easy fun and simple. I reccomend this book this book to kids in middle school who just want to fit in. I enjoyed this book because of that main lessson. I believe that the purpose Wendy Mass was trying to point out is that you have to stay true to yourself and it will be ok.
